Virtual assistants and global teams in the www.go-va.com.au tribe are encouraged to read as part of our culture-building practices. That’s why new team members or newly regularized ones get a book (Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People or Robin Sharma’s Little Black Book for Stunning Success) during their tea sessions with CEO Fiona Kesby.
Permission to Read is part of our Discovery today. Ultimately, the more that we are into the value of Discovery (Learn is what we used to say about Discovery in our core values), the greater that you’ll see things progress in your life. The key is you’ve got to give yourself permission and therefore have that time to read.
Writing in the World Economic Forum blog last 13 July 2020, Manavi Kapur mentioned the practice of bibliotherapy or “the use of books to improve one’s mental health.”
If at first you find it difficult to read, that’s normal. Anxiety can wear down the focus that reading requires.
“Staying consistent with reading can be a tough task at first but there are simple hacks that can help you create a routine that blooms into a natural discipline,” Kapur wrote. A reading habit can develop when we deliberately make it part of each day: like reading for 30 minutes (or more, if you like) or reading at least 20 pages a day. You’ll find his full story here
To encourage reading further, our CEO Fiona Kesby or Founder Matt Kesby will recommend some titles they’ve found helpful, either during the Daily Updates or the Discover You lunch.
Now if you think, “I’d like to get books but they’re expensive…” here’s an amazing resource for you. It’s called PDFdrive.com. You can get up to 100 megabytes of data or storage that you can keep, and there are so many books you can start reading.
There’s absolutely nothing stopping you when there is so much amazing content available for free and some really incredible writers in there as well. So, here’s a quote from Dr. Seuss to close off: “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
So, think about that: even if it’s just in your mind and imagination for now, there are so many places you’ll go to, with the greater knowledge that you have.
